Averting disaster

Nepal is reeling under a chronic energy crisis, which is also a global problem. We cannot avoid it but only manage.

Managing energy crisis is not only the responsibility of the government but also of its citizens. It is not enough that we are ready to pay for energy whatever it costs.

Efficient and proper utilization of energy is a must if we want to normalize its supply side.

The government should take immediate measures and the citizens should support it. Let me suggest some of the actions:

• Import of all types of vehicles should be banned except those for emergency service.

• Use of existing private and government vehicles should be minimized and a quota system for fuel dispensing should be imposed.

• Cycling and walking practice should be promoted.

• Import of luxury electric appliance such as air conditions, electrical heaters, etc should be banned and their usage discouraged through progressive taxing or billing system.

• Sales of generators and inverters should be discouraged (except for emergency services) as these machines put a heavy burden on the supply system.

• Domestic load above 15 amp should be discouraged.

• All big buildings should have provisions for harvesting renewable energy sources such as solar power, wind power, biogas etc.

If we keep ignoring these issues, the situation will change into a disaster.
